One afternoon at a nearby coffee shop we were asked what we were going to teach when we opened the door of the studio. We responded to the small gathered crowed with an answer they likely had not expected. I am sure everyone considered we would offer a type of martial skill with which we understood or had mastered. We answered with the real reason for the existence of the martial arts.
- We teach Human Development.
- We teach how to be better human beings, more capable, more confident, and better able to handle conflict both physically and verbally. We teach how to be self disciplined and in self control of our actions and language when dealing with people that are impolite to potentially dangerous.
From young children to retired adults, everyone has the right to feel safe. We teach self-defense on both a physical level and how to use words to redirect negative comments and deflect verbal abuse. Regardless of age or physical condition there is a program you can follow and practice within the Sanano Martial Arts System. All are welcome if they are of good character or are willing to develop it.
We conduct karate training in the Japanese style of Shotokan, the Korean style of Tae Kwon Do, light training in soft styles from China and the hard style of Combat Judo. We have a particular focus on the martial styles of the Philippines with Arnis de Mano, what you would refer to simply as the art of stick fighting, and the hand-to-hand combat styles so often seen now in movies like the “Jason Bourne Trilogy” starring Matt Damon, “The Book of Eli” with Denzel Washington, “300” with Gerard Butler, “Mission Impossible” with Tom Cruise, and with Liam Neeson in the movie “Taken”. Andy Sanano is a Grand Master in the Philippine Martial Arts and a recent Hall of Fame inductee.
There is also instruction in Practical Meditation and Yoga for you if you’re interested. The circular philosophy of a “Total Defense System” is completed as we also teach how to use words skillfully during conflict with a program called Verbal Judo where Lee Fjelstad has been the Vice President of the Verbal Judo Institute for over 30 years. Trained and presented to over 1,000,000 people on four continents, Verbal Judo is a program created by Dr. George J. Thompson for police and initially transformed by Lee into applications for business and corporations, government agencies, the airlines and cruise lines, medical facilities, sports officials, and even private and public schools and public libraries. In all our training we stress awareness, control, safety, and respect as a priority.
